What It Means to Be a Digital Citizen: Respect, Responsibility, and Connection

Image
In my opinion, a digital citizen is someone who belongs to the virtual world, which is an image of our real society. A digital citizen uses technology and the internet to communicate with others, just like people do in the physical world. They also obey the laws, norms, and ethics of the digital world. These factors mold the way a person acts online, ensuring that the digital world is respectful and safe. A digital citizen is someone who: (1) is part of society, (2) uses technology to connect with others, and (3) respects the ethical guidelines and laws that ensure online spaces remain safe and positive. From my point of view, being a digital citizen begins with being part of a living society. This social connection affects access to technology, which is a major part of digital citizenship. A person who can use the internet and digital tools, whether for work, socializing, or learning, is already participating in the digital society. Being a digital citizen is not just about having gad...

WHY IoT MATTERS: A Reflection

Image
Today, I found myself reflecting on the Internet of Things and how it would change our daily lives fundamentally. It is quite astonishing at how interconnected our devices now are, making the mundane smarter and more efficient. I remember when I first began to notice these changes—a smart thermostat changing the temperature when I left, or my watch nudging me to get moving because I had been sitting for too long. It was a bit of science fiction and a bit overwhelming at first, but now I see it as something very convenient and wonderful. They have allowed me to take care of myself better and stay on top of my health in ways that I hadn't thought of before.      I recently enjoyed a TEDx talk given by Benson Hougland. He shared a good story about his wearable armband, which monitors some of his vital signs while he sleeps. If it perceives something alarming, it can then take immediate action: "Turns out the sensors in my armband sense...

Identifying the issues and challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT)

Introduction: The Internet of Things (IoT) is playing a huge part in the fourth industrial revolution such as healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and smart urbanism. IoT enables the possibility of connection through the internet, thereby enhancing efficiency, automating tasks, and allowing for better resource management; thus, making life smarter and more sustainable. However, the fast growth of the IoT coincides with several challenges. The connected devices are causing problems like e-waste and resource depletion under the environmental issues. Besides, worries about energy consumption, network security, and the need for regulatory clarity to achieve sustainable development are also increasing. This report focuses on the IoT potentials and points out the challenges of sustainability and resource conservation that can be experienced at around the same time. Additionally, it emphasizes innovation as key to promoting e-waste recycling, intelligent network management, improved secur...

GROWING WORLD OF E-COMMERCE: How can I avoid and mitigate risks?

Image
Research has investigated various consequences and risks associated with e-commerce. E-commerce plays an important role in businesses, which is why it’s better to be educated about the risks that come with it. No one can deny the rapid development of e-commerce, and it has impacted many businesses and lifestyles. However, it also carries risks such as data theft, fraud, scams, malware, and other security breaches, as well as problems with third-party platforms, data privacy laws, internet security laws, and customer service issues. Risk management in e-commerce is especially important when making decisions. As a consumer, I always choose what’s best and safest for me. By assessing potential risks, I can see into the future and be aware of possible outcomes or what to expect. My Personal Reflection on Protection As I reflect on my personal experiences, I realize how risk management and assessment practices can be helpful in understanding future implications. One example is cyberse...

My First Online Shopping Experience (thank you mom)

Image
Shopping has never been easier since the creation of online shopping. My interest in this topic began back in Grade 10 when my research project was focused on online shopping. That experience gave me a better understanding of how the process works, especially the role of money and the importance of handling it with caution. After all, money holds value, and with the risks in the online world, it's hard to trust anyone.  As time went on, people adapted to this massive change. In fact, most of the things my family own (particularly my grandmother) comes from online stores. Despite my curiosity, I never tried it myself due to trust issues and I never asked permission to my mom (she's so strict). I’ve never seen myself as materialistic, which might explain why I never forced myself to try and purchase something online.  But one day, something changed. The wallpaper in my apartment ripped, and since it wasn’t durable, my mom suggested I buy a replacement. I got excited and that was...

Sorting Through the Web: How to Select Relevant and Accurate Information

Image
The WWW or World Wide Web has a lot of information and sources, like A LOT. It can be overwhelming and it's hard to choose the right source because of its wide range of options. I recall being taught how to select the appropriate websites to visit when my group members and I had to create our research for the course project. Since it’s for research, we need credible and reliable information. We were assigned sections to contribute to our research, and that particular groupmate sent their portion. At the time, I was with the group leader, and I noticed that she was unsure of how she would react because the groupmate had sent a Wikipedia source, which was out of date since it had been written in 1900. I don’t know; I forgot. At that point, I was also unsure of how to respond—should I laugh or feel disappointed? Not everyone may know where to go for accurate and relevant information. I learned from that experience that information retrieval on its own is not good enough...
