What It Means to Be a Digital Citizen: Respect, Responsibility, and Connection



In my opinion, a digital citizen is someone who belongs to the virtual world, which is an image of our real society. A digital citizen uses technology and the internet to communicate with others, just like people do in the physical world. They also obey the laws, norms, and ethics of the digital world. These factors mold the way a person acts online, ensuring that the digital world is respectful and safe.

A digital citizen is someone who: (1) is part of society, (2) uses technology to connect with others, and (3) respects the ethical guidelines and laws that ensure online spaces remain safe and positive.

From my point of view, being a digital citizen begins with being part of a living society. This social connection affects access to technology, which is a major part of digital citizenship. A person who can use the internet and digital tools, whether for work, socializing, or learning, is already participating in the digital society.


Being a digital citizen is not just about having gadgets but being able to navigate the online world. Digital citizens must know how to use these tools to interact with others and share information in a manner consistent with the expectations of the digital society.


Lastly, a digital citizen must respect the norms of the cyber world. That would involve adhering to the law, upholding privacy, and accepting the norms for online communication. Given that the internet connects people together in a global format, the way we behave online impacts others, and positive online behavior is just as pertinent as in-person behavior.


Being a digital citizen is not only about using technology but also how we interact with it and others in the digital world. It is being aware of the importance of being part of the online community, using technology to connect and share, and acting responsibly by following the laws and ethical standards of the digital space. We, as digital citizens, should follow rules and laws in our digital world in order to respect others, take thoughtful decisions, and create a better online environment. Ultimately, it's all about our responsibility in the context of how our actions both online and offline help in making a better, safer, and more inclusive society.

Sorting Through the Web: How to Select Relevant and Accurate Information

     The WWW or World Wide Web has a lot of information and sources, like A LOT. It can be overwhelming and it's hard to choose the right source because of its wide range of options. I recall being taught how to select the appropriate websites to visit when my group members and I had to create our research for the course project. Since it’s for research, we need credible and reliable information. We were assigned sections to contribute to our research, and that particular groupmate sent their portion. At the time, I was with the group leader, and I noticed that she was unsure of how she would react because the groupmate had sent a Wikipedia source, which was out of date since it had been written in 1900. I don’t know; I forgot. At that point, I was also unsure of how to respond—should I laugh or feel disappointed? Not everyone may know where to go for accurate and relevant information.
