Being a Tech-Savvy: More Than “Just Knowing” Technology
"Nobody can escape from the outright need for technology in our daily lives. All of us are so subject to technology that we can't manage without it.". My journey in understanding the world of technology improved as I used it. It all started in computer class. All of the things I have learned from those classes have provided me with skills to use the computer, leading to more room for improvement and exploring other technology-related things. When we think about the word tech-savvy, the first thing that comes into the minds of some is that it is a person who knows how to use a smartphone; however, being tech-savvy means having a good knowledge and understanding of modern technology, particularly computers. Now that we understand what tech-savvy means, let’s dive into the skills and competence that make someone tech-savvy in today’s world, as I relate to each one of them.
First, a tech-savvy person needs their core technical skills. Basic computer literacy is where I started my journey as tech-savvy. It amazes me that a divide can help get the job done faster and easier. Storytime, back in eighth grade, we had to choose between cookery class and CHS (computer hardware and software) class for our TVE subject. Guess what? I chose CHS. My experiences in that class shaped my ability to use computers (I'm glad that I chose that subject). Moreover, as a tech-savvy person, internet navigation and research skills are essential. I learned how to explore the internet and search for things, particularly about my interests like music. I also improved my research skills over time since we were taught in Practical Research 1 and 2 how to choose the right website to get information for our research. Another skill that a tech-savvy person has is an understanding of common software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. As a student my whole life, this software helped me get the job done for my schoolwork, making my academic performance better and less tiring. Lastly, the core technical skill of a tech-savvy person is the ability to use digital communication. This includes not just knowing how to send a text or call someone, but also the ability to send emails and video conferencing.
Second, being a tech-savvy person requires adaptability, willingness to learn new skills, and the ability to evolve with technology. Being able to keep up with technological changes is an essential characteristic of being tech-savvy. Consider it to be "Be a lifelong learner." It is about having the ability to grasp new technologies quickly to keep pace with the changing technology. Of course, I encountered problems with using technology, especially in software-related issues. The complexity of those technologies makes me sometimes question my capacity to learn how to use them, but I was thankful enough for YouTube tutorials for me to get along. Third, a skill required for a tech-savvy person includes skills in problem-solving and critical thinking. We can say that the scope of knowledge here is beyond the basics. After exploring technology’s capabilities, it is important to learn how to think critically about its use. This includes skills in troubleshooting technical issues independently and identifying and understanding potential security risks. I was informed that passwords can easily be accessed by hackers. This is where I started using unusual and uncommon combinations for my passwords. Furthermore, evaluating information sources and discerning reliable information from fake information. Being tech-savvy is not just about knowing how to use a tool; it is about understanding how it works and how to use it safely.
Finally, I wanted to get into the importance of collaborating and communicating for being a tech-savvy person. The ability to communicate has been changed by technology. Social media, instant messaging apps, and cell phones allow us to contact anyone anywhere in the world. This tool has made it so easy for us to talk about ideas with others, cooperate on projects with workers or even classmates, and keep up with our dear ones. As an active user of social media, I believe that communicating with people by technology never harms us as long as we utilize them appropriately and ethically. The following skills including core technical skills, adaptability and willingness to learn new things, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and communication and collaboration through technology, can be a guide for people who desire to be tech-savvy. “The technology you use impresses no one. The experience you create with it is everything.” -Sean Gerety. To wrap it up, I encourage everyone to develop their technology skills and embrace the opportunities that technology offers as tech-savvy wisely and effectively.
